Windows 7 DNS server not responding

Windows 7 DNS server not responding

This issue can occur by incorrect DNS settings. I suggest you perform the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.
1. Click "Start", input "NCPA.CPL" (without quotation marks) and press Enter.
2. Right click on the connection that you use for the local connection, and then click "Properties".
3. Click to select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)", and then click "Properties".
4. In the Internet Protocol window, let's change the "Preferred DNS server" to 208.67.222.222
5. Click 'OK' twice to complete the modification.
If the issue persists, please repeat the steps and change the "Preferred DNS server" to 208.67.220.220.
Meanwhile, I would appreciate your help in clarifying that if the network is based on a router or a DSL modem. If there is a router, please bypass it and connect to DSL modem directly for a test.

VJ (19th July,2010): The above fix did not stand for a long period,  Rick @ CBR played around to fix the wired and wireless connection issue but couldn't able to figure out where to go what to do,  finally he reset the IE setting by going into IE/Tools/Internet options/Advance/Reset and it worked.

Unablet o save the document to sharepoint document library.:

Environment: Win 2008 R2 x64, Sharepoint 2010

Document library is setup to have templates.

ISSUE: When I fill the template by selecting file/new and while save its saving this to the FILE SYSTEM rather than to the associated SharePoint Library :( moreover when I enter the url of my site collection under the file name its giving me error as "PATH DOES NOT EXISTS"

FYI:
WebClient service is turned On
Desktop Experience feature is enabled on the server.
Added the DWORD entry to registered as described in the KB article (even though its not a solution for sharepoint case) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870853

Issue: When I tried to open the virtual machine using the vmware I get the following message, this is the 1st time I’m opening not sure how come the error message says its already in use by a VM/snapshot, does anybody has clue on this?

Error Message: Unable to open file"xxx\wubdiws.vmdk : one of the disks in this virtual machine is already in use by a virtual machine or by a snapshot

Resolution: After a 2 day battle and a quick tip from a professional able to find the following KB article and fallowed the case 4 able to resolve the issue successfully :)

In summary created new .vmx file and intern its created bunch of associated files and able to boot the machine.

VMware KB: Validating the .vmx settings of a virtual machine

4.Create a new virtual machine that points to the same virtual disks:
Note: You cannot perform this task with VMware Player or an ACE Instance.
a.Back up your virtual machine by cloning it or copying all of the files in its directory somewhere else.
b.Delete the existing .vmx file.
c.Create a new virtual machine.
d.Choose Custom for the type of virtual machine.
e.When prompted by the wizard for the location of the virtual machine, pick the same location as the existing virtual machine.
f.Choose all of the same settings as for the original virtual machine.
g.Click Use an existing virtual disk when prompted for the disk. Browse to the location of the original virtual machine's .vmdk files.
Note: If the original virtual machine had more than one virtual disk, you must edit the new virtual machine after it has been created to add these back in again.
h.Power on the new virtual machine after it is created.
i.If the problem no longer occurs, confirm that everything is now working as expected, and delete the copy of the virtual machine.

core10 - HP Compaq NC6220 and NC6230 BIOS reset procedure

I recently acquired a new to me NC6230 laptop. The only problem was the BIOS were password protected, and I just couldn't have that. So after some searching, reading (the HP manual sucks) and some trial and error I finally got it right. Here's the procedure, hopefully it will save others some time.HP Compaq NC6220/6230 BIOS password reset procedure:
disconnect the power supply and remove the battery
remove the three screws that hold in the keyboard on the bottom
up top slide the four tabs on the keyboard closest to the screen towards the touch pad
fold the keyboard over (no need to disconnect it from the mainboard)
using a tiny flat head pry up the power button panel along the edge of the screen
bow the power button panel in the middle of the laptop and gently ease one side up
unplug the connector for the power button panel and remove
locate the CMOS battery in the upper right corner, follow the wire to the left and locate the connector at the upper left corner of the dvd drive
remove the two screws located in the immediate vicinity of the CMOS battery connector
detach the CMOS battery connector
have a beer, sip slow and take at least five minutes
DO NOT reconnect the CMOS battery or the laptop battery
connect the power supply and power on
hit F10 to enter setup
if you did it right you should get right into the BIOS setup; change whatever settings you fancy, save and exit
let the laptop finish POST then power off and disconnect the power supply
reassembly is the reverse of abovewhen you power back on and right before the OS boots you'll get a message about the date and time not being set, this will go away after the first full boot into the OS

What Files Make Up a Virtual Machine?

What Files Make Up a Virtual Machine?

What Files Make Up a Virtual Machine?

You may never need to know the file names or locations for your virtual machine files. Virtual machine file management is performed by VMware Workstation. If the behind the scenes file structure is not interesting to you, skip this section.

A virtual machine typically is stored on the host computer in a set of files, usually in a directory created by Workstation for that specific virtual machine.

The key files are listed here by extension. In these examples, is the name of your virtual machine

Extension

File Name

Description

.log

.log

or

vmware.log

This is the file that keeps a log of key VMware Workstation activity. This file can be useful in troubleshooting if you encounter problems. This file is stored in the directory that holds the configuration (.vmx) file of the virtual machine.

.nvram

.nvram

or

nvram

This is the file that stores the state of the virtual machine's BIOS.

.vmdk

.vmdk

This is a virtual disk file, which stores the contents of the virtual machine's hard disk drive.

A virtual disk is made up of one or more .vmdk files. If you have specified that the virtual disk should be split into 2GB chunks, the number of .vmdk files depends on the size of the virtual disk. As data is added to a virtual disk, the .vmdk files grow in size, to a maximum of 2GB each. (If you specify that all space should be allocated when you create the disk, these files start at the maximum size and do not grow.) Almost all of a .vmdk file's content is the virtual machine's data, with a small portion allotted to virtual machine overhead.

If the virtual machine is connected directly to a physical disk, rather than to a virtual disk, the .vmdk file stores information about the partitions the virtual machine is allowed to access.

Earlier VMware products used the extension .dsk for virtual disk files.

-<###>.vmdk

This is a redo-log file, created automatically when a virtual machine has one or more snapshots. This file stores changes made to a virtual disk while the virtual machine is running. There may be more than one such file. The ### indicates a unique suffix added automatically by VMware Workstation to avoid duplicate file names.

.vmem

.vmem

The virtual machine's paging file, which backs up the guest main memory on the host file system. This file exists only when the virtual machine is running, or if the virtual machine has crashed.

Each snapshot of a virtual machine that is powered on has an associated .vmem file, which contains the guest's main memory, saved as part of the snapshot.

.vmsd

.vmsd

This is a centralized file for storing information and metadata about snapshots.

.vmsn

-Snapshot.vmsn

This is the snapshot state file, which stores the running state of a virtual machine at the time you take that snapshot

-Snapshot<###>.vmsn

This is the file which stores the state of a snapshot

.vmss

.vmss

This is the suspended state file, which stores the state of a suspended virtual machine

.Some earlier VMware products used the extension .std for suspended state files

.vmtm

.vmtm

This is the configuration file containing team data.

.vmx

.vmx

This is the primary configuration file, which stores settings chosen in the New Virtual Machine Wizard or virtual machine settings editor. If you created the virtual machine under an earlier version of VMware Workstation on a Linux host, this file may have a .cfg extension

.vmxf

.vmxf

This is a supplemental configuration file for virtual machines that are in a team. Note that the .vmxf file remains if a virtual machine is removed from the team.

VMware software provides a completely virtualized set of hardware to the guest operating system.[17] VMware software virtualizes the hardware for a video adapter, a network adapter, and hard disk adapters. The host provides pass-through drivers for guest USB, serial, and parallel devices. In this way, VMware virtual machines become highly portable between computers, because every host looks nearly identical to the guest. In practice, a system administrator can pause operations on a virtual machine guest, move or copy that guest to another physical computer, and there resume execution exactly at the point of suspension. Alternately, for enterprise servers, a feature called VMotion allows the migration of operational guest virtual machines between similar but separate hardware hosts sharing the same storage. Each of these transitions is completely transparent to any users on the virtual machine at the time it is being migrated.

Virtual Machine Disk Format, Desktop Management, PC Management

Virtual Machine Disk Format, Desktop Management, PC Management

A virtual machine encapsulates an entire server or desktop environment in a file. The virtual machine disk format specification describes and documents the virtual machine environment and how it is stored. The virtual machine disk format specification is critical to how virtual environments are provisioned, manipulated, patched, updated, scanned and backed up.

Developers creating Virtual Disk management applications should consider using the VMware Virtual Disk Development Kit. The VMware Virtual Disk Development Kit includes a C library and command line utilities to easily create and access VMDK files.

Has Microsoft Removed Show Desktop Shortcut in Windows 7? - Tweaking with Vishal: "'Show Desktop' is a shortcut which is present in Quick Launch toolbar in Windows taskbar. Once you click on its icon, it minimizes all running programs to taskbar so that you can view the Desktop.

Since Microsoft integrated the Quick Launch toolbar in taskbar in Windows 7, you'll no longer see the old 'Show Desktop' icon. But that doesn't mean it has been removed in Windows 7.

Actually the location and look of 'Show Desktop' has changed in Windows 7. Now its located at the end of taskbar in form of a small rectangle.
